2019年11月9日 · Things I learnt: Get a smallish car as many side streets are absolutely tiny. Google maps easily got us around Japan even though we understand little to no Japanese. Toll costs add up as we spent all up over 25,000 yen for the whole trip. Everyone speeds! Trucks, buses, cars all going easily 20km/h over the speed limit all the time.
2023年6月23日 · I've done long-distance, multi-day rentals with Times Car Share. Was no problem and quite convenient. Most of the time. Car sharing is cheaper than proper car rentals. Times car share is a really good option but depending where you live and the dates you need it, it's sometimes hard to schedule a car for multiple days.

Studying downloaded basic Japanese rules of the road and traffic signs helped. Cars rented for about $90/day, including the maximum rental agency insurance. While fuel is expensive, I drove slow in a rental with great gas milage (my 2nd rental was a hybrid), so fuel costs weren't significant.
As the title says - we rented a car in Japan and loved every minute of it. To top it off, tolls, gas and parking were much cheaper than we expected. We decided to rent a car in Odawara (on May 13, 2024), keep it for a week and return it in Osaka. It was pricey to return the car so far away, but in our opinion, worth every penny.
With a rental car/car share your license is registered as the only authorized driver and therefore enough proof. It's why your license number is given to the police who can find your record. I'm not even sure if you can avoid the points if you just let Times take care of it and ban you, I assume they can let the police know and they can add the points on their end.
