Google maps was my saviour in Tokyo! Very reliable and accurate. If looking for travel directions on the underground, it will give you all different options and how much it will cost for each option.
- Accurate in general. Note that Google Map is not available for offline use in Japan. You must have an internet connection.
- If you're looking for offline maps, I've used CityMaps2Go and been very happy with their accuracy in Japan

- I walked a lot when I was in Tokyo and google maps always gave me interesting routes - back streets... I guess they were the shortest distance - so...
- You may be able to buy a SIM card from Amazon, I did it on the US site, maybe you can check it out.
I used it 2 weeks ago in Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, and Kyoto without issues. The blue man compass dot takes a while to calibrate if you are just coming above ground from the subway. Just walk around until it reads your location and cardinal directions. I did not use

Google Map has always worked fine in Japan, but you do need live data access. The small street issue is a non-issue. Just count as you walk along, including even the smaller side streets.
I have now made a Tokyo Google map that shows where the different attractions are located and I have posted this on http://gardkarlsen.com/tokyo_google_map.htm Please note that the markers on the map leads back to the trip report that I have made.
It is easy enough to use Google maps in Japan. But much better is to grab a variety of maps when you land at any international airport and at the tourism office of every main train station. They include some fun ads, too.
