A public address system (or PA system) is an electronic system comprising microphones, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related equipment. It increases the apparent volume (loudness) of a human voice, musical instrument, or other acoustic sound source or recorded sound or music.

PA 是 Public Address 的簡稱，是透過專業、完整的音響設備，擴大音源至整個空間，使活動演出能順利進行。 專業的 PA 音響設備與人員操控可避免出現聲音失真與回授，比如活動中表演者尚未使用麥克風，喇叭卻出現尖銳的噪音，造成活動還沒開始即中斷，因此，良好應用 PA 系統去進行擴音的規劃與設計相當重要。
監聽系統的重要性
在表演活動或演唱會上，對於表演者來說最重要是能聽到明確的拍子、音準與音色，才不會發生自己拍子亂掉卻渾然不知，也因此，舞台上常會搭配舞台監聽系統，讓樂手能聽到自己樂器發出的聲音，並依據每位表演者不同的需求，去調整所聽到的聲音比例。
麥克風指向性與頻率響應
針對不同的樂器與收音方式，使用妥當的指向性與頻率響應的麥克風，才能確保聲音品質、音量較為平均。 麥克風「指向性」是接收聲音的靈敏度範圍，而在範圍以外的聲音通常較難被收到音。指向性常見有三種包含全指向、單一指向、雙指向。 麥克風的「頻率響應」則是，麥克風面對不同頻率聲音而反應出的音量大小。比如某支麥克風可能在距離聲音來源 5 公尺處，收音會比原先聲音更為突出。
我們常聽到的 PA 大哥 / 姊姊，其實他們是現場音控師，負責掌握現場聲音的大小、均衡、調整延遲等，簡單來說是把關現場聲音的整體呈現。在控台上幾乎都在調整聲音，但其實在表演前即有許多前置準備工作，例如確認當天表演與設備需求，事先研究樂團風格屬性，以求當日能還原呈現原本作品。 因此，為了讓音控師協助你呈現最好的聲音，通常與 PA 大哥合作時，建議事前與 PA 大哥確認器材清單，並溝通表演中間器材更換的時間，或音樂有降弦等情形，方便音控師先準備對應的效果器等。另外，切記不要隨便關掉 Keyboard 或合成器，甚至是拔掉電源線等，因為關機產生的巨響對於 PA 來說極度傷害耳朵。
