根據香港法例，在香港締結婚姻需經以下程序: 結婚其中一方須直接或透過婚姻監禮人向婚姻登記官（登記官）遞交擬結婚通知書 (通知書)。 登記官須在其辦事處展示通知書的第I部分，直至發出婚姻登記官證明書或通知書的三個月有效期屆滿為止。 如符合所有法定要求，登記官可在通知書遞交後最少15天，簽發「婚姻登記官證明書｣，讓結婚雙方在通知書的三個月有效期內舉行婚禮。 婚禮須在婚姻登記處由登記官主持，或在特許的禮拜場所由合資格的神職人員主持，或由婚姻監禮人在香港其他地方主持。 婚禮須於遞交通知書後三個月內進行，否則該通知書便會作廢，之後有關人士如欲舉行婚禮，必須重新遞交通知書。
