    「院出」的流程大致如下： 首先逝者親友到醫院殮房認領逝者遺體；接著是為逝者潔體、更衣、化妝及入殮；隨即便可以在殮房旁的小禮堂舉行告別儀式，頭尾最多只可以使用小禮堂一個小時。 公立醫院的小禮堂大多佈置簡潔和設備簡單，座椅一般只有約二十張，部分會設有鋼琴。 禮堂可進行不同宗教的禮儀，但不容許明火（點蠟燭）和燒香，所以儀式會以簡單為主。 在完成簡單告別儀式後，親友便可以把遺體直接送往火葬場或墳場進行火葬或土葬。 使用醫院的小禮堂／告別室「院出」是免費的，但謹記要預早透過殯儀公司訂好，而且使用時間必須是日間。 若選用其他殯儀館的服務，殯儀費用各有差異，一般來說喪禮費用大概二萬元左右，當中包括了棺木、靈車及基本殯儀項目，但若要其他宗教儀式則可能需要支付附加費。
