Game theory was developed extensively in the 1950s, and was explicitly applied to evolution in the 1970s, although similar developments go back at least as far as the 1930s. Game theory has been widely recognized as an important tool in many fields.

Game theory is the study of the ways in which interacting choices of economic agents produce outcomes with respect to the preferences (or utilities) of those agents, where the outcomes in question might have been intended by none of the agents.
Game theory is the mathematical analysis of decision making. In game theory, the interaction between two or more players is often framed in terms of a game with a particular set of rules. Of interest may be the strategies that give optimal outcomes for each of the players or, conversely, the resulting outcomes when certain strategies are played.
