2013年2月5日 · この絵、洋画の技法を使って日本の昔話の一場面を描いたものです。 浦島太郎が竜宮城から玉手箱をもらって帰るところで、乙姫をはじめとする女性たちに見送られているシーンです。 だれもが知っているお話の絵ですが、見るものには強烈な違和感を感じさせる不思議な絵です。 空が妖しい雲に覆われているせいでしょうか。 背後にそびえたつ竜宮城が立派な石城として描かれているせいでしょうか。 それよりも奇妙なのは、登場する人物が、欧州の裸婦像のようにふくよかで色白でなまなましいことでしょう。 なんとなくインドや東南アジアの宗教画のようにも思えます。 この強烈な違和感となまなましさは、見るものを不思議とひきつけてしまいます。 芳翠はわざとこのような違和感を描いたのでしょうか。
