   植林工作始於一八七O年，其目的由早期在於美化環境、控制沖刷、生產柴薪、改善集水系統，及至近年藉以增強生物多樣性及回復生態自然原貌。 選擇樹種. 早期多採用本地的馬尾松 (山松)為植林樹種，亦大量使用生長快速的外來樹種如紅膠木及台灣相思。 近三十年已逐漸轉用本土植物植林。 現時本署已採集超過一百種的本土樹種的種子並在苗圃培育成樹苗作植林之用。 其中一些成功用作植林的本土樹種有潤楠屬植物、黧蒴錐及木荷等。 野外勘察. 設立種植試驗區，觀察及評估不同植物物種在野外的生長情況。 嘗試找出提高樹苗成活率的方法，例如利用草墊蓋在樹苗旁防止雜草生長，或將樹苗以圍罩圍上，防止嚙類動物的噬咬均在試驗階段。
