Situated on the northeast hillside of Atami at 170 meters above sea, this historic site has been venerated by lords and shoguns for centuries, among them Minamoto no Yoritomo, Ashikaga Takauji and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ukiyo-e is a specific painting style that evolved during the Edo period (1603–1867), backed by the thriving economy and flourishing culture of the capital city Edo as the basis of the enriched lives of townspeople. One of the most popular subjects was women. People sported portraits of beauties, posing elegantly in their exquisite costumes.
Important Cultural Property. Standing Sho-kannon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara) Data. Explanation. This statue, holding a lotus bud in the left hand and wearing a crown decorated with a central statuette of Nyorai, is the standard form of Kannon Bosatsu known as Shō Kannon. It is carved from one block of sandalwood, from the crown to the pedestal.
