I got the same issue today, and can't check in online, and also the flight looks like overbooked, I have to go to Air Canada counter as early as I can, called Air Canada, they said the counter is only open 3 hrs before the departure.

Should be able to check in on the Air Canada website. Need the AC locator number which should show up when you look your reservation up on the United website.

Instead they now offer "Future Travel Credit" which is severely penalizing those who cancel. Non Transferrable. One time use and cannot be combined with any other payment or another credit.
