I recommend 3n there and consider visiting Nagasaki, Yufuin/Beppu as day trips. Otherwise, consider Okayama/Kurashiki, Takamatsu, Matsuyama and surrounding islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

The website created by the Japanese government's Ministry of the Environment explains the characteristics of the two routes. Both are attractive. The guided ground walkway route may also be easier to find information on photo spots for the day.

Have been to Tokyo before so would like to explore new areas. Any recommendations please? We love food, arcitechure and nature.
