While it is harsh to human standards, the best thing to do is indeed to let nature take its course. Very often birds of parasitic species will monitor the nest and if the nest is interfered with or the parent rejects the parasite egg, then the parasite parent will attack and destroy the nest and harm the nest parents.
If their argument is literally "let nature take it's course," that's a terrible argument. Tell them to go live in a forest with no tools beyond what they can make from sticks and rocks; see how far nature takes them then.
