卍 is mostly used in modern Japan as a map symbol. It is part of some official map symbol listing that I’ve never heard of, but seems to be like Ordnance Survey in the UK - the definitive list of map symbols and how they should be used.
I use 卍 in place of 萬 or 万, the character for the number 10,000. In my language, they are interchangeable and have the same pronunciation. If you didn't know that before, now you do.
