WeChat is a communication apps mainly used in China but not really popular in Hong Kong unless you have a (somewhat strong) tied with China... in your case it might be useful if you need to contact your son's friend who is currently in China.

- Your son's friend is definitely not correct. Cash is still king in both HK and China. e-Payment methods such as WeChat or Paypal is not common.

- Thais use Line. Isn’t WeChat Chinese? Not common in Thailand anyway.

2024年4月11日 · I have my international Visa and Mastercard linked to my WeChat Pay. I have never tried to send/pay money, nor add any funds to WeChat Pay. All this money were from red pocket money. However, when I attempt to pay at a restaurant that accepts WeChat Pay in Canada, I get this error message.

Because practically everyone in China uses WeChat. So if you want to communicate with someone in China, then WeChat is almost a must. Report inappropriate content.
