Why ion fragmentation provides useful information. Compounds can have the same empirical formula, i.e., the same molecular weight or m/z, but be different chemically. Breaking them into parts (fragmenting them) helps to identify what they are. Each of the following peptides gives rise to exactly the same m/z for the [M+2H]2+ ion.
