WeChat is a communication apps mainly used in China but not really popular in Hong Kong unless you have a (somewhat strong) tied with China... in your case it might be useful if you need to contact your son's friend who is currently in China.

- Your son's friend is definitely not correct. Cash is still king in both HK and China. e-Payment methods such as WeChat or Paypal is not common.

2024年4月11日 · It has very many features and most you can do without and lose very little. However, if you can use Whatsapp then you can use WeChat and, with my famous five minute tutorial, you can use the translation feature.
You can download a wechat app international version or use the email to sign up firstly if you are not in China. Text, call and video are free under WIFI. If you are not under WIFI, please pay attention to your data plan when you are using video call.
