WeChat is a communication apps mainly used in China but not really popular in Hong Kong unless you have a (somewhat strong) tied with China... in your case it might be useful if you need to contact your son's friend who is currently in China.

- Your son's friend is definitely not correct. Cash is still king in both HK and China. e-Payment methods such as WeChat or Paypal is not common.

2024年4月11日 · After a lot of reading on the subject it appears that foreign cards do work as advertised. They do not work on WeChat apps downloaded outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. They work on Weixin. Weixin is the version of wechat you get when you download in the above countries and have a chinese number.
