WeChat is a communication apps mainly used in China but not really popular in Hong Kong unless you have a (somewhat strong) tied with China... in your case it might be useful if you need to contact your son's friend who is currently in China.

- Your son's friend is definitely not correct. Cash is still king in both HK and China. e-Payment methods such as WeChat or Paypal is not common.

Because practically everyone in China uses WeChat. So if you want to communicate with someone in China, then WeChat is almost a must. Report inappropriate content.
