   海流就如同海中的河流，常年沿著幾近固定的方向流動，這種具有大規模、流向穩定的水流動稱之為海流，調節了南北極區與赤道地區溫度分布，因溫度或鹽度的變化改變海水的密度，因密度不同而造成海水的流動，稱為溫鹽環流或密度流，其海流速很緩慢，最大僅約1.5公分/秒。
