Hi, I am not sure if this is the right forum, but we are coming to Australia for the first time. My daughter will be studying at the University of Melbourne as an undergraduate and would need a SIM and mobile plan.

Wireless network operators have booths at the airports, and depending on the amount of data and length of time you need, the cost is modest - $5 to $20.
Typically, T-Mobile works with local phone companies to roam between whichever carrier provides the best signal in your cell area. If you need better or faster connections, you can get a supplemental T-Mobile international plan by the day or up to the month.
