The most scenic route is to take 80 to Auburn, then north on Hwy 49 to Nevada City, then east on Hwy 20, which then rejoins 80. If you want to drive by Lake Tahoe, then go south on 89 at Truckee to Tahoe City. Then east on 28 along the Lake north shore.
