1929年，何甘棠成為首位勝出香港打吡的華籍馬主。 至1934年，華籍馬主所擁的馬匹，佔全部出賽馬匹約六成，而李蘭生則是當時最熱愛賽馬的華人之一。 他擁有最大的馬房，而馬圈中人都稱他為「蘭先生」。 他的兄弟李子方和李少彭也十分熱衷賽馬。 李蘭生更養成了一個習慣，就是每天早上都親自以鮮草餵飼愛駒。 李氏家族愛馬的天性顯然留存在遺傳因子裏，因為李蘭生的兒子，即已故李福深先生，曾於1998年至2002年擔任香港賽馬會主席。
