Oriental is an object, not a person. I'm generally very laid back about my Asian heritage, but being called Oriental is like nails on a chalkboard. I always wondered if its acceptable to call a Russian person Asian. It's offensive because people decided it's offensive during the height of the PC movement.

The word "Oriental" dates from a time when Europe was super racist and created this idea of the exotic, mystical Other Place where Those Exotic People lived. They thought of Asia in terms of how Europeans could consume and exploit it, instead of as countries and people with their own rights and desires.

According to Wikipedia it's a western invention originally from the "Aladdin Quick Step" written in 1847. Anyways I fell down that Wikipedia rabbit hole a while ago and also ended reading about "Tarantella Napoletana" aka the Italian riff and "The Streets of Cairo" the Arabic riff. Never ever heard of that.
