At the national level, BEA publishes annual, quarterly, and monthly estimates of consumer spending.
The underlying card transaction data for these estimates of spending by industry group were collected by Fiserv, one of the largest card intermediaries in the country. Each observation in the data corresponds to a single transaction (for example, a consumer using a credit card, debit card, or gift card).
