天文台では、ガイドの方が星を探してくれてそれをみんなで観察します。 ただ、雲が多い日だと順番が回ってくる間に星が雲に隠れてしまい見れないこともあります。
山頂には、「きらら室根山天文台」があり、星の観察を行うことができます。 この建物の3階が無料で大パノラマを楽しむことができます。 昼間は、広大な岩手や宮城の自然を、夜は星空や夜景を見ることができ、結構人気スポットとなっています。
