   1912年， 英皇 佐治五世 對香港天文台頒賜 皇家香港天文台 （英語： Royal Observatory Hong Kong ）的稱號，直至1997年7月1日 香港特別行政區 成立為止。 香港天文台在1948年加入 國際氣象組織 （ 世界氣象組織 前身），開始進一步使用 高技術 的 儀器 進行 氣象 預測，天文台於1949年開始利用 無線電探空儀 及 雷達探空系統 預測氣象資料，並於1959年引入第一座 天氣雷達 。 於1964年後接收 極軌衛星 的自動圖像傳送信號。 1964年1月1日，天文台用 攝氏 報告氣溫，與 華氏 同用兩年，至1966年1月1日不再使用華氏。
