工作坊邀請了聯合國婦女署統計專員，以及本港政府統計處代表主講，有份促成此事的，正是長期關注內地性別平權新聞的前記者、浸大新聞系助理教授閭丘露薇。 本身是聯合國婦女署轄下統計小組成員的閭丘露薇表示，「性別平等」是聯合國致力推動的普世價值之一，今年初，婦女署擬於亞太地區的十一個成員地區，推動利用性別數據促進平權的活動，便推薦香港作為大中華的中心和亞太地區的起點，舉行一連串活動。 「有八十多名大學生報名參加工作坊，當中有二十多人來自內地大學，包括廣州大學、中山大學、暨南大學和北京師範大學─香港浸會大學聯合國際學院。 」閭丘露薇表示，本港參與者以浸大學生為主，亦有來自其他大學，不止新聞系，還有社會學、社會工作學系學生。
