1. Re: Hong Kong Departure Tax Refund? 5 years ago. No. If you enter by other methods than using the ferry to HKIA, you are considered (and you actually are) departing from Hong Kong. The departure tax refund is only given to those who "depart" from Macau or elsewhere directly via SkyPier.

- #6 It's 'departure' tax, not 'arrival' tax. So no you won't get it because it's not included in your flight ticket.

There is no longer any government tax on hotel accommodation in HK. The 3% tax was scrapped in 2008. Most hotels make a 10% service charge.
The main difference for a on-loan and sold Octopus is that you can get back the deposit when return the card for former while the latter usually have special design. If you (or your kid) like the design, just buy one and bring it home as souvenir.
