Kyushu (九州, Kyūshū, literally "nine provinces") is Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu. An early center of Japanese civilization, Kyushu offers many historic treasures, modern cities and natural beauty.
Ogimachi is the transport hub of the Shirakawa-go region, where the bus lines from Takayama, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Toyama and Takaoka meet. Throughout the year, visitors to Furukawa can learn more about the festival in the Furukawa Festival Hall (飛騨古川まつり会館, Hida Furukawa Matsuri Kaikan), also known as Okoshidaiko no Sato. Some of the actual festival floats are stored and displayed in the hall.
Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡, Takachiho-kyō) is a narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River. The nearly sheer cliffs lining the gorge are made of volcanic basalt columns which resemble the scales of a dragon where the stone twisted and flowed as it formed.
Getting around. Kokura Station is the transport hub of Kitakyushu and a major station along the Sanyo Shinkansen. It is also served by the JR Sanyo Line in the direction of Honshu, the JR Kagoshima Line, which runs south towards Fukuoka and north to Moji Port, and the JR Nippo Line, which runs in the direction of Oita.
Amanohashidate (天橋立) is a pine covered sandbar that spans the mouth of Miyazu Bay in the scenic, coastal region of northern Kyoto Prefecture. Viewed from the mountains at either end of the bay, the Amanohashidate Sandbar (which roughly translates to "bridge in heaven") looks like a pathway between heaven and earth.
Yufuin (由布院 as onsen resort, 湯布院 as city district) is a popular hot spring resort, located about ten kilometers inland from Beppu, another, much larger and more developed hot spring resort. Yufuin has a wealth of art museums, cafes and boutiques, and many travelers come to the city just to stroll about town for the day.
