Wifi calling via Telstra worked very well for us in Canada last year as there is excellent free wifi almost everywhere. The only times we needed to use the $10/day data roaming was to use google maps when driving in & out of Calgary.

No, you don't need a converter, you need an adapter. These are different things. Converters convert VOLTAGE. If your equipment has a transformer, as all Smart Phones, Computers, and tablets have, you don't need a converter - the voltage is converted by the transformer.
