Due to its proximity to Tokyo, Atami has long been a popular seaside resort town with plenty of hot springs and ryokan in addition to museums and other cultural sites.

The building was constructed during the early period of Sapporo's development in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was installed.

  6. Hiroshima (広島) is the principal city of the Chugoku Region and home to over a million inhabitants. When the first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the city became known worldwide for this unenviable distinction. The destructive power of the bomb was tremendous and obliterated nearly everything within a two kilometer radius.

  7. Held annually on May 15, the Aoi Matsuri (葵祭) is one of Kyoto 's three most famous festivals (along with the Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri ). The festival's main attraction is a large parade, in which over 500 people dressed in the aristocratic style of the Heian Period (794-1185) walk from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo Shrines.
