Class A Amplifier. The most commonly used type of power amplifier configuration is the Class A Amplifier. The Class A amplifier is the simplest form of power amplifier that uses a single switching transistor in the standard common emitter circuit configuration as seen previously to produce an inverted output.
A class A amplifier is conducting through all the period of the signal (θ=360°); Class B only for one-half the input period (θ=180°), class C for much less than half the input period (θ<180°).
Class A amplifiers have the highest linearity and Class B and C amplifiers result in considerable distortion. As a compromise, Class AB amplifiers are used in many cellular applications, although Class C amplifiers are used with constant envelope modulation schemes, as in GSM.
