在日語裡「傘」「笠」「蓋」都讀作「KASA」，因為三種東西本來的用途是類似的。傘和茶、漢字一樣，在飛鳥時代（592年 – 710年）從中國傳入日本。在平安時代的古畫中可以看到傘的出現，但是那個時候的傘跟現在的形態不太一樣，用途也不是遮雨，而是權威的象徵（類似皇帝的華蓋）。
