The Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall (杉原千畝記念館, Sugihara Chiune Kinenkan) commemorates the story of Sugihara Chiune (1900-1986), a Japanese diplomat who saved the lives of hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust by granting them visas to escape Europe. The museum is located in Sugihara's home town Yaotsu, Gifu Prefecture, in a rural area.
Kompirasan, formally known as Kotohiragu (金刀比羅宮, Kotohiragū), is the main shrine of multiple Kompira shrines found around Japan that are dedicated to sailors and seafaring. Located on the wooded slope of Mount Zozu in Kotohira, the approach to Kompirasan is an arduous series of 1,368 stone steps.
The 5-storied pagoda at the base of Haguro-san is undergoing renovations from May 8, 2023 until around spring 2025 during which it will be covered by scaffolding. Haguro-san (羽黒山) is the most easily accessible of the three mountains of Dewa Sanzan.
Experiences. Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) was formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail. Kanmangafuchi is also known for its row of about 70 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased.
Myoryuji Temple (妙立寺, Myōryūji), commonly known as Ninjadera ("Ninja Temple"), was built by the Maeda lords, rulers over the region during the Edo Period. While not actually associated with ninja, the temple earned its nickname because of its many deceptive defences.
Kawagoe (川越) is located about 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo and is suitable as a day trip destination. Its main street, lined with Kurazukuri (clay-walled warehouse-styled) buildings, retains an ambience reminiscent of an old town from the Edo Period (1603-1867) and allows us to imagine the streets from past centuries.
The Shinhotaka Ropeway (新穂高ロープウェイ) is one of Japan's most unique ropeways. It has one of the largest elevation gains in the country as it climbs over 1000 meters up the side of the Hotake Mountain Range, which includes Oku-Hotakedake, Japan's third highest peak.
