It’s because Season 1 is character driven while 2&3, while still good, don’t focus AS much on character (outside of El) as much, which is why Season 4 is so damned good. Episode 1 begins with this supernatural kidnapping and we were not supposed to fully understand what happened. The Duffers wanted this scene to feel like Will had vanished into thin air. He remembers everything he’s been through since the day he was taken. He even says “It got me. The Demogorgon” in S1E8.
