The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations are offered by Pearson Edexcel. Pearson Edexcel is an examining and awarding body based in the UK and operates throughout the world. Upon popular demand, the HKEAA introduced the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Chinese Examinations in May 2008. GCSE is designed basically for UK students.
GCSE Chinese (Spoken Mandarin) has a Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) and a Higher Tier (grades 4–9). Students must take all four question papers at the same tier.

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in Chinese (spoken Mandarin/spoken Cantonese) consists of four externally examined papers based on the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Under the new syllabuses, candidates are required to sit for two additional papers for the AS-Level Chinese examination, including the listening test and speaking test. Please note that only Mandarin version of the listening materials will be provided by Cambridge.
