There is no way to guarantee that a web client would get exactly the files as expected. With a proper "app", there is a signature chain associated with the binary be it desktop or mobile.

I have used Whatsapp web version at work and at home extensively and it has been very convenient. The issue is that a web client basically puts your messages at the mercy of public key infrastructure, where there is an agent in possession of encryption keys where we have no choice but to trust them.
