   香港藝術館的前身香港博物美術館（City Museum and Art Gallery）由市政局成立於1962年 [3]，起初設於中環 愛丁堡廣場的大會堂高座頂層9至11樓，是香港第一所公營美術館 [4]。1962年5月，舉辦首個大型展覽「今日的香港藝術」。 至1974年正式分拆成香港博物館（即今香港歷史博物館）及香港藝術館 [5]。
