  2. 2011年7月8日 · Senior Member. Los Angeles, California. English, USA. Jul 8, 2011. #9. I'd have to do the same. If it was "exclusive engagement" I would think it was a one-night show. An "exclusive engagement" usually means "only one night". "Exclusive concert", though, is not clear to me.

  3. 2014年6月10日 · Room rates are subject to 15% service charge. Is this sentence right? You say it in this way, using "subject to"? Seemingly I don't match any usage of "subject to" with that in the sentence. Does the phrase mean "include" or "exclude"? The room rates include servece charge, or you pay room...

  4. 2011年7月19日 · 大家好,我想考证一个问题: Multiple choice 很多字典解释都是「多项选择题」(多选)。但在国内(大陆),学生的「单选」「多选」是两种不同的题型。「单选」是只能选择一项的题目,「多选」是可以选择多个选项的题目。两种题型合称「选择题」。 根据我的经验,在英语国家,multiple choice并非 ...

  6. 2014年4月6日 · Apr 6, 2014. #3. "Miss out" is a phrasal verb, chpema. When people use it with an object, they follow "out" with "on": I don't want to miss out. I don't want to miss out on anything. You could use either "miss it" or "miss out" in a remark about a party, but "miss" followed by some pronoun like "that" seems more likely to me: Darlene's having a ...

  7. 2010年8月12日 · It is interesting that in these two examples here seems to be even further subtlety. 'The house has a door at either end.' really means 'Both ends of the house have doors.'. It couldn't be only one end with a door. 'Either one of you is welcome to join me.' means almost the same as 'You are both welcome to join me.'.

  8. 2011年11月22日 · Moderator. near Limoges, Fr. English (Yorkshire) Nov 22, 2011. #2. I would say "assistant to" is specific and exclusive, "assistant for" is more general. Mr Smith is assistant to the managing director. (Here, I understand that there is only one assistant.) We need an (other) assistant for the managing director.

  9. 2010年5月25日 · May 26, 2010. #19. In any event, the use of initials for such honorifics is totally mystifying in AE, except perhaps for the diplomatic corps. Speaking as one who has served in the military and never been entrusted with anything diplomatic, my first response to "H.E." is "high explosive." (Really.

  10. 2007年3月27日 · That definition of mistress is not entirely accurate. As the word is generally understood, a mistress is a woman that a man has a somewhat long-term, sexual relationship with, even though he is married. Historically, well-to-do men paid women to do this. You could make a career out of being a paid mistress. (This was not quite the same as being ...

  11. 2008年1月11日 · Jan 11, 2008. #2. Hi annie, I've never really heard the expression "a tin". There is such thing as "a tin can", but I wouldn't really ever say "a tin". Many types of food come in cans, such as soup or vegetables, and they are called "canned goods". The only thing I can possibly think of that would work for "tin" is a "tin of sardines".
