Anyway, I stand corrected - while there are many sites out there that state MOT stands for Motor Ordinance Test, and all the time I lived in the UK (I am British but left in 1985) I was aware of that meaning, but you are indeed right, it stands for the now defunct Ministry of Transport (now Department of Transport).
