Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes joint inflammation and pain. It happens when the immune system doesn’t work properly and attacks the lining of the joints, called the synovium. The disease commonly affects the hands, knees or ankles, and usually the same joint on both sides of the body, such as both hands or both knees.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that mostly causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in joints. RA may cause you to feel unusually tired, to have occasional fevers, and to have a loss of appetite. Treatments can include medications, ongoing care from a doctor, and surgery.
The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known. It is considered an autoimmune disease. Components of the immune system attack the soft tissue that lines the joints (synovial tissue) and can also attack connective tissue in many other parts of the body, such as the blood vessels and lungs.
