It was taken by my daughter who said it was visible to the naked eye as well, but not as bright, of course. Also, I saw a picture taken from central Texas of the aurora, but it is much weaker and it wasn't visible with the naked eye.

The solar wind for example, and I dare say flares should have much more velocity than star and galactic wind. So some dynamic to slow the particles is needed for recombination.
