An LEI is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard that is assigned to legal entities that are counterparties to financial transactions. The first 4 digits of an LEI correspond to the issuing Local Operating Unit. Digits 5 and 6 are always set to 0, 7-18 are randomly generated and the last two are check digits.
