Why does the formula work? The slope of a straight line is constant. This means that regardless what point we are at on the line, it increases (or decreases) at the same rate; for every distance in x along the line, it moves a corresponding, constant, distance in y. We can visualize this using the following image.

Use the Distance Formula to find the distance between the points \((10,−4)\) and \((−1,5)\). Write the answer in exact form and then find the decimal approximation, rounded to the nearest tenth if needed.
Distance Formula The distance between (x 1, y 1) and (x 2, y 2) is given by: `d=sqrt((x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2` Note: Don't worry about which point you choose for (x 1, y 1) (it can be the first or second point given), because the answer works out the same.
By stretching a rubber band between two pegs on a geoboard, we can discover how to find the slope of a line. Doing the Manipulative Mathematics activity “Exploring Slope” will help you develop a better understanding of the slope of a line. (Graph paper can be used instead of a geoboard, if needed.)
