But right now, I'm a bit confused by how to sequence everything. We will be traveling from Kanazawa to Hiroshima / Miyajima to Kyoto. I plan to purchase the Kansai Hiroshima rail pass before we leave home.

You’ll need at least 4 full days to include Arashiyama and Nara. Day 1 is OK. Day 2: Go early to Kiyomizudera and walk the Higashiyama Walk in the morning.
