Matsumae is located near the southwestern tip of Hokkaido about 100 kilometers west of Hakodate. A train line used to run to Matsumae, but it was discontinued in 1988. These days, Matsumae is reached by bus from Kikonai Station (95 minutes, 1300 yen one way, one bus every 1-2 hours, not covered by the Japan Rail Pass ).

For anyone else following this thread, According to the Port Authority: Westerdam will moor at Wakamatsu wharf which the terminal is located. Our port have just one terminal used for cruise ship. 2-3 h. It should take under three hours to reach Lake Toya from Hakodate along National Route 5 and the Doo Expressway (to Abuta-Toyako Interchange). Expressway tolls amount to around 3500 yen one way. Taking toll free roads instead increases travel time by approximately half an hour. Above fees and schedules are subject to change.
