香港日本文化協會創立於1962年9月，是一個民間非牟利、非政治性團體，其宗旨如下： 促進香港特區與日本人民之間的相互了解； 提高公眾人士對日本在藝術、文學、哲學、科學、歷史、語言等文化成就與工業、生活、社會及經濟等各層面的認識和興趣； 開辦日語課程予公眾人士修讀； 主辦各類型的演講會、展覽會、研討會等活動，以促進港日的友好交流。 本會於2000年1月26日，已註冊為一家非牟利的有限公司。 歷屆日本國駐香港總領事，均會出任為本會的名譽會長。 同時，本會亦會邀請社會賢達，出任本會的贊助、副贊助人及名譽副會長。 協會各項會務之管理與開展，由理事會負責主持，理事會成員不超過20名，依據會章規定於會員週年大會中由會員選出，理事會的組成人員包括會長、副會長、主席、副主席、理事及秘書長。
