HKUKC, formerly The Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre, was established in the mid 1980s with the generous support of Sir Horace Kadoorie and Lord Lawrence Kadoorie. It is situated on 10 hectares of land near Shek Kong in the New Territories. HKUKC was opened by the then Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Edward Youde, on 7 June 1986.
