Harvesting marimo from Lake Akan is prohibited for conservation, so most marimo sold as pets are imported from Russia and Ukraine then hand-rolled into balls by people.

Just a psa to anyone buying esperit brand Marimo. Seen a post the other day about these being sold in Homebase in the UK. Obviously had to buy one when I saw them. Just had a look today (I bought it yesterday) and there’s little bugs in the water. Kind of look like baby brine shrimp, but they move differently.
