So according to that theory if I said "I should love to come" then in reported speech - when I becomes he - the verb therefore becomes "would". In practice many, or most, people use "would" for I and we anyhow.

The reason why this is wrong is that it doesn't make sense to mix past and present tenses when using reported speech.
